UBULU-UKU UNION MISSION

CULTURE

Ubulu-Uku is situated at longitude 6.42°E and latitude 6.25°N. It is located in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State. According to Census 2006, Ubulu-Uku has a population of 10,416 adults and children. Ubulu-uku is situated some thirty kilometres (30 km) west of the River Niger in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State. Eastwards it shares a boundary with Ogwashi-Uku, westwards with Obior; northwards with Issele-Uku and southwards with Ubulu-Unor. Ubulu Uku is sited in an undulating environment with its Enugu-Iyi and Abuedo end at the top of a long stretch of hills, while its centre, fanning out from the Ubulu tree to Isho, Akwu, Ogbeofu, Idumu-Osume etc. are located in a valley. Rolling down these hills are rivers which run through the entire clan to the sea through other neighbouring clans. Iyi Agor (River Agor) stands out prominently among these. Ubulu-Uku is the largest and most populated town in Aniocha Local Government Area. Topographically it is a hilly town that could be easily compared to Agbor in Delta State, Auchi in Edo State and Ibadan in Oyo State. This hilly nature of the town accounts for the serious problem of erosion which it faces. The Problem has made some of the streets impassable especially the street leading from the major road to Ogbeofu. On the other hand when one looks at the town from any of the hilly spots, especially at night, one sees a beautiful scenery that could be said to be one of the best that nature has bestowed on this part of the earth. The town has one major stream called Iyi-Agor which was the main source of water supply before the advent of pipe-borne water. A few other minor streams like Nkpitime-Isho, Iyi-Nta, Iyi-Eko and Iyi-Ozala also serve people in various parts of the town.

     OMU

Omu is a man and woman put together. She is a Queen Mother. Appointed by her community as a female King (as the case may be; Eze-nwanyi). She is entitled to a palace and palace chiefs but specifically in charge of women and markets and then the community deity. At her coronation, she ceases to be married if she is, because she has to return to her father’s place to reign. She attends meetings of the male council and she is buried like a king at death. She does not eat in public places. No lover. No husband. She dresses the way an Omu should dress and she bears the spiritual responsibility of her community in the case of mysterious happenings. She finds solutions to mysterious happenings in the community.

IWU

Iwu of Ubulu-Uku is where the Obi of Ubulu-Uku has some royal roles to play before and after the festival. There exists Oshene (Ohene) who is also the Chief Priest. There are three Eze-Iwus, one for the Obi, the other for Nne-Ubulu, and the last one for Ezemu. Oshene has one Eze-Iwu, Ezemu has one and the Obi of the town also has one. Isibe-Iwu (Cooking of Iwu) starts on a Sunday, brought down on Friday which for Ubulu-Uku is the period that nobody talks signifying the period of silence.

When brought down, a period also known as “Ihorda Iwu” celebration continues ending on a Saturday. A major rite of the Ihorda Iwu is the Otito which the Obi gives to the Eze-Iwus after the Iwu has been put down. Nne-Ubulu and Ezemu also give Otito to the Eze-Iwus. With these Otitos handed to them, the Eze-Iwus embark on a journey to Mkpitime River to bring back the pots of water together with the Otito given to them. The three Eze-Iwus are expected to return to the palace with a pot of water, a task that must be executed. This is the most important rite of Iwu as celebrated in Ubulu-Uku because failure to bring the pot of water means that Eze-Iwu will die thus rendering the celebration of Iwu incomplete
